John Howell, proprietor, has restored antique furniture for 36 years. He specializes in museum quality pieces from the 18th and 19th century. Some highlights of his business have been restoring furniture for Teddy Roosevelt's estate at Sagamore Hill and teaching "Authenticating Antique Furniture" at Long Island University. John has also done research on improved methods and materials for restoration. He's developed and patented a cleanser that removes the deteriorated surface of a finish while preserving the underlying intact finish. He also provides consulting services to other woodworkers who are interested in learning about new developments in materials and techniques for restoration.

Each piece of furniture receives the careful attention of John Howell, proprietor. He consults with every customer to determine how best to preserve the original attributes of their furniture while doing the most to bring out the enhanced beauty of the wood. Furniture should be usable, yet still maintain its integrity as an antique. Only experience can guide decisions on how to achieve both of these goals. If a piece needs refinishing, all stripping and finishing is done by hand. Shellac is the preferred finish.
